What I will never forget!
Why my first DJ assignments would have been almost the last:
In fact, as early as 1976 (at the age of 16) I organized so-called 99 Pfennig parties in the youth center Wettbergen (near Hanover) – every Saturday.
With the proceeds we beautified our youth room, built a bar, installed a DJ system in a converted piano and made light effects.
Word got around quickly & it didn’t take long before a few “rockers” stood in front of the door.
Back then, the guys were almost as young as us (today one of the most well-known biker organizations).
They came in, didn’t pay an entrance fee and one of them built up in front of me and said: “Hey, play something sensible, otherwise we’ll flatten the place”.
My answer was like this:
We buy our records from the revenues. If we don’t collect money, I can’t buy any desired titles.
If I am beaten up, or made small wood out of the system – there will probably be no party next week and record requests cost a beer, by the way.
The guy looked at me, turned around and walked away.
Three minutes later, the five of them came up to me again.
They put a beer on the system and one of them said: “Hey guys, the little one is cool – I like him”.
They put 20 DM on the table and said: We’ll see you again next week.
They later gave me the nickname “Travolta” – and over the many years I DJed for some of the guys at their milestone birthdays or weddings. I survived, that’s how it all started …
Once I was worth 10,000 € as a DJ for an hour:
at the CeBit in Hanover. There, “IBM” extended the party by an hour at the trade fair, because of the good atmosphere. 10,000 €, that’s how much each hour cost extra.
First the check had to be signed at the fair administration & then the party continued.
My fee was “doubled” – I was satisfied & was booked 3 times for the booth party for the next few years.
They didn’t want to book me for 400,- € in the evening:
There was a customer who said: 400 € in the evening – can’t be, they meant 400 € per hour? No, I said.
At first she didn’t want to book me, but I played for this customer on her 30th birthday.
Then a year later at the engagement party and then again a year later at the “disengagement party” – crazy world, already in the 90s.
Bundesliga Coaches, Football Players & Presidents:
There was an agency that always booked me for difficult cases. Because I have always worked “modestly”.
Without taking photos of the celebrities or selfies with the mobile phone.
Always discreet. Even celebrities are only human. So over the many years I have been used as a DJ for a “national coach”, even for a state president.
Because of Chernobyl, I look like you know me today:
I was at the TUI Club Mamaia on the Black Sea, Romania in May 1986. I installed the system there at the beginning of the season and pulled off the season opening party. Unfortunately only in front of 20 guests.
The others did not come, because of the nuclear disaster in Chernobyl. Only when the atomic cloud changed the wind direction and moved over the Black Sea did we dismantle everything again and flew back.
Nevertheless, I was still on site for another two weeks. You didn’t see anything, you didn’t smell anything from this cloud and you didn’t feel anything.
Only a few years later, “all” my hair fell out, my illnesses, injuries have been very unusual since then.
If you consider that today, 40 years later, you can still measure the consequences of this nuclear accident in German forests, then I know why I have only been in a good mood all my life and almost always “shine”.
I survived that too.
More later – in my book !
